Query

Anyone remember Sy's Dock at 25 Hancox Street, right at the corner of Diving? Was it a fish factory for a time or just a dock where you could buy fish? I know the Henry family owned a lobster business just to the north, on the other side of Diving Street, where the dock has been turned into a flourishing garden (!) but I'm curious to find out what happened to the business at Sy's Dock. And who was Sy? Thanks for any information.

Cy's was a lobster pound complete with the first cold, ocean water tanks in the area. Cy Amancio himself had fished as did his wife when they lived in the Old Country, had moved here and started their married lives which was marred by tragedy when their only son was killed in WWII, making them one of the first "Gold Star" families in the Borough.

Cy went to work at the mills and his wife ran the lobster business out of the back yard which was really a sizable barn which housed either four or six huge lobster pens. Behind that and heading to the Little Narragansett Bay, they had a small dock which people fished off. Sadly, the hurricanes of the fifties left them in relatively unstable condition.

When the Sea Village became more of a marina/restaurant, they built docs just to the north of Cy's, Cy had gotten pretty old, and then his wife became ill and soon died with him following soon afterward (if my memory of the order of that is clear)

Their house which I believe is 15 Diving Street, was purchased by Dr. Bachman who remodeled and retooled it beautifully, and I believe he restored the dock. In its most recent sale, I believe the price was well over a million dollars which I'm sure would have amazed the Amancio's as much as it does me.

Thank you so much for this information. I think that Cy's Dock was (is) on Hancox Street. That house has sold recently (and for a lot, I believe, as you guessed it would). Was there any commercial activity at the dock at 25 Hancox Street, which is just south (and adjacent) to the intersection of Hancox and Diving Streets?
